Besides the Somerset Art Journaling mags, they have 2 special publications that are great:

My hands down FAVE Art Journaling book is eye candy and not 'how to's'.  Our very own Nancy of Crowabout StudioB is in this one.

is a new one I just picked up. It is written by 2 men - so it offers a different slant than most of the others. Many similar techniques but with a man's approach. I am really enjoying it!

one is really about Zines - but it is such a collaboration about so many topics, I DEFY you to come away from this book uninspired to try something new. This book is nearly a compendium on most things creative... I'm STILL working my way through this book.  Sorry, no picture.
http://www.amazon.com/Kaleidoscope-Ideas-Projects-Spark-Creativity/dp/B0024FAOVE/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282950761&sr=1-1http://www.amazon.com/Kaleidoscope-Ideas-Projects-Spark-Creativity/dp/B0024FAOVE/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282950761&sr=1-1Kaleidoscope

If you want to know more specifics... I can go on!  Most are really collaborative efforts so you get more than just one artists slant on things.  Everything is linked.

Yep, I get ALL the Somerset magazines! I love them to bits and pieces....esp the new Art Journaling one.

Thank you for all the suggestions, PA! It reminded me that I own the last two...duh but I think I am going to have to pick up the one with Nancy in it for sure and one or two others.

I am going to my favorite art store, Zinnia's,  tommorow and will check those out.

What about
Sabrina Wood Harrison? Do you have any of hers? I am intrigued with the papers I see in her latest one.

Hands down, the 1000 Art Journal Pages is my Fave... SOOOO many artists and styles. No how to's here - it's ALL inspiration. AND you get a look at the billion styles that there are out there.  Set your style freeeeeeeeeee....

Do you mean Sabrina Ward Harrison?

If yes, I have:

Messy Thrilling Life: The Art of Figuring Out How to Live

http://www.amazon.com/Messy-Thrilling-Life-Figuring-Live/dp/0812967666/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282959107&sr=1-5http://www.amazon.com/Messy-Thrilling-Life-Figuring-Live/dp/0812967666/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282959107&sr=1-5

She has several more... but my bookstores aren't carrying them. I guess I'm going to have to order them.

Sabrina's books are more a glimpse into her diary/journal. It has more of a raw feel to them... I think of hers as visual journals.  Her books push me to be more honest, with myself and what I'm willing to put on a page. She incorporates a lot of personal images on her page... and plays with those too. She shows how beautiful imperfection really is, in ourselves, our art, our photos, our lives.

Great list Patty Anne.

I have a few myself, (quite a few of the ones that PA listed actually), and here are the ones that I have that PA didn't list :) and really like:

http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Flight-Inspiration-Techniques-Creative/dp/160061082X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282990549&sr=8-1Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Journals-Creative-Healing-Self-Expression/dp/1592533647/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282990615&sr=1-1
Art Journals and Creative Healing
by Sharon Soneff

I also have The Art of Personal Imagery by Corey Moortgat, which I don't like particularly much.  Mostly because it's about her personal journey of trying and failing to get pregnant, and finally succeeding.   While I don't necessarily have an issue with the subject matter, I found that her book didn't speak to me from an art journaling point of view.

Another book is http://www.amazon.com/Doodle-Diary-Art-Journaling-Girls/dp/1423605292/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282990800&sr=1-1Doodle Diary, Art Journaling For Girls by Dawn DeVries Sokol, which strays away from the altered art type of art journaling.

When I went looking, I found that I had lot of books on altered art, altered books, collage and making your own books.  If you are interested in any of those, holler out.

Wow! PA those are awesome suggestions! I don't have any so now I will be shopping for some for sure now. Can you use these for digi or is it strictly using real stuff? As you know I started my art journal but all my pages are 8x8 digi and I am using a 3 ring Bo Bunny album with chipboard tab dividers so at some point I will do the dividers with real scrapbooking supplies.

Gina, I have quite a few of the books PA listed and I use them for digi.  It doesn't really matter what medium you use, it's the ideas in them.

Yep, I don't plan on using them other than for inspiration for my digi stuff. I picked up 1000 Artist Journal Pages last night and it really is fabulous!!!! Pure eye candy.

And I totally forgot about this blog, http://artjournaling.tumblr.com/Formations. Its is like GSO for art journaling. I haven't been to my Google Blog Reader in ages, sob, and forgot that I had this marked. Subscribe to the reader feed as its much easier to view that way.

I prefer my books that have multiple artist input - both in imagery and the writing about...  There are SO MANY styles - so many ways...

Like with Corey Moortgat's book on Personal Imagery that Karin brought up, she has some really good messages in her book - BUT it is buried heavily in her own story and her own imagery...  which isn't my particular style. It took quite awhile for me to see beyond her own art & story to her helpful messages.

LOOOOOOOOOOVE Kelly Rae Roberts book - for more than art journaling... it was a real personal exploration.  AND I've gone through the book again when I was at a different place in my life and got even more out of it.

I keep my Art Journaling books with my collage, multi-media & altered art books... they all seem to be varying degrees of the same things.

KARIN - I'm dying to know more about "Art Journals & Personal Healing" -- focus, review, helpful?  Would you buy it again? (not really a second copy, but you know what I mean)

HOLLIE - at the art store, did you happen to see the new Strathmore books that are geared towards Art Journaling?  Has anyone seen them?  I'm dying to hear a hands on review.

No, they don't care them. This shop is more of a doo dad place then an art store. Its a mecca for altered artists. You can glimpse at them http://web.mac.com/ttolkin/zinnia/home.htmlHERE. Our very Nancy is a poster girl for the new Strathmore books!

OMG! Honey, I'm home! From the looks of the place, I'd still be there.

LOVE that wall of half round table displays. What a clever display.

I've been dying to see the STrathmore Art Journal books since I did that interview on Nancy for the zine... Just haven't seen them yet.

Patty Ann, Art Journals and Creative Healing has multiple contributors, which I always like.   It's published by Quarry, and I generally do like their books.

The tag line on the cover is - Restoring the spirit thought self expression.

With each journal presented, there is a brief explanation of what it's about and how it can relate to you, the artist/journaler.  There is also a creative tip, plus the artist's story of why she created the journal.  Most of the artists also have a very brief explanation of what they used for the journal, and in some cases, the symbolism used and their meaning.   There are also four journal work sheets.

Would I buy the book again or recommend it?  Yes, absolutely.

I keep my art journals books with my altered art, book making/binding, paper art books too.

Hollie, I love that store!
